Store bought doggie treats can add up quickly, especially if you are training your puppy. Instead of buying bag after bag of doggie treats at the store, you should try making homemade dog treats. Not only is it more economical, but it is a great way to keep an eye on your dog’s health. Homemade dog treats are similar to making cookies, it’s pretty simple. Here are a few homemade doggie treats you should try:
Ankle Biter Peanut Butter Drops
Ingredients:
¾ C. flour
1 egg
1 T honey
1 tsp peanut butter
¼ C shortening
1 tsp baking soda
¼ C rolled oats
½ tsp vanilla
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Heat the honey and peanut butter in the microwave until the peanut butter is melted. Mix the remaining ingredients together and combine with heated honey and peanut butter. Drop by ½ tsp onto cookie sheet. Allow treat to bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven, allow treat to cool. Store treats in an airtight container.
Meaty Twists
Ingredients:
3 ½ C flour
1 C corn meal
1 package unflavored gelatin
¼ C milk
1 egg
¼ C corn oil
1 jar strained beef baby food
1 beef bouillon cube
¾ C boiling water
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Boil the water and dissolve the bouillon cube in the water. Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl. Add the milk, egg, oil, beef, and beef bouillon. Stir ingredients until thoroughly mixed. Roll dough onto a floured surface and roll until it is ¼ inch thick. Cut in ¼ inch by 3 inch strips, twisting each stick before placing it on the cookie sheet. Bake the meaty twists for 35 to 40 minutes. Once they have cooked, allow them to cool on the cooling rack. Place the meaty twists in an airtight container in the fridge.
Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Danish
Ingredients:
¼ pound low-fat cream cheese
½ C all natural apple sauce
½ C. vegetable oil
2 tsp. real vanilla extract
2 C. whole wheat flour
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Knead the dough on a floured surface, and then roll the dough to be ½ inch thick. Cut the dough with cookie cutters and place on a cookie sheet. Bake the treats for 20 minutes and turn off the oven. Leave the treats in the oven for an additional 1 to 2 hours so they can harden.
Sunday’s Crock pot Lamb and Rice
Ingredients:
1 pound ground lamb
4 cloves garlic
5 C. of boiling water
1 ½ C. brown rice
2 stalks broccoli, cut into large pieces
2 medium potatoes, cubed
3 medium carrots cut into pieces
Brown the lamb, potatoes and garlic in a frying pan. Place the rice, broccoli and carrots in the crock pot. Add the lamb, potatoes and garlic. Cover with boiling water. Allow it to cook overnight, serve this gourmet meal to your dog the following day.
You can make practically any type of doggie treat you like. There are a few ingredients you should never use because they are full of toxins and allergens that can make your dog very sick. Some of the ingredients to avoid include:
- Raisins
- Macadamia nuts
- Grapes
- Chocolate
- Soy
