10 Tips for a Great Family Road Trip

September 9, 2009

  1. A well packed car.
A car stuffed to the gills with luggage can be uncomfortable to ride in. So, make your road trip more enjoyable by packing your car well. Have the things you need easy to access, and leave room for your feet, and for moving around some.
  2. Something to snack on.
One of the things that make road trips fun is having snacks. So pack snacks that are not going to make you feel sick later. It is good to have some candy and treats, but pack some apple slices, string cheese, gogurts, or other healthier snacking options as well.
  3. Planned stops.
When you are on a road trip, getting to your destination should be half the fun, so do some research to see what fun things you can do along the way, or things that are not too far out of the way. Stopping to see the world’s largest thermometer, or eating at a place known around the world for their chili cheese fries, can add a certain degree of excitement to a trip. So, make the driving as fun as the final destination.
  4. Lack of problems.
Nothing can ruin a road trip faster than having a tire blow out, or a car break down in the middle of nowhere. It is expensive, it can be hot, boring, etc. If you have a car full of kids, and you get stuck in a hot dessert because your car breaks down, what are you going to do to entertain the kids while sitting there waiting for help? So, avoid this situation by having your car checked out before leaving, and by traveling along well traveled roads, and places with cell service.
  5. Entertainment in the car.
Of course one way to ramp up a road trip is with fun things to do in the car. You can listen to audio books. You can take along a portable DVD player and watch a movie, or even take a gaming system in the car and play video games. Or, at the very least, put together a fun playlist of songs for the road.
  6. Spirit of fun.
If you want a great road trip you have to be in the spirit of it. It is only going to be as fun as you make it. So, be excited and with the right attitude.  Perhaps for some  pre-trip fun, the kids will enjoy playing Driving Games on their computer.
  7. Sitting in the most effective ways.
When taking a road trip with kids, one of the best things you can do for yourself is arrange the seating according to how it will be the best. For example, if your oldest tends to fight with your second oldest, do not sit them next to each other. If you have someone with long legs, do not put them in the back row of a mini-van. If you have a child who needs help with things like getting their straw in their juice box, have someone sitting next to them that can and will help.
  8. Bathroom and leg stretching breaks.
Road trips go faster and are more fun when you take stops for a breather. It is better for the driver, and the passengers.
  9. Comfy climate.
Keeping the car at a temperature that works for everyone is not always possible. So have some blankets, etc. on hand so that everyone can be at a comfy temperature regardless of what the air conditioner or heater is set to.

10. Flexibility.
If you want to have a great road trip you have to be okay with delays, stops, and changes to the plan. Be flexible in what you expect and it will go far better.
