Fun Butterfly Crafts

Here are some fun and easy butterfly crafts to get you started.

  • Origami Butterfly
    • Materials
      • Construction paper
      • Scissors
      • Markers or crayons
      • Pipe cleaner or curling ribbon
    • Instructions
      • Make a square piece paper. To do this fold the corner of a piece of paper over
      • Cut off the small rectangle from the bottom of the paper so that it now forms a square
      • Keep the paper folded into the triangle shape
      • Fold the triangle in half
      • Open up the fold you just made
      • Put the triangle on the table with the central; fold pointing up – like a tent
      • Fold one corner over
      • Open it up again
      • Fold the other corner over
      • Open it up and you should now have a butterfly shape
      • Decorate the butterfly
      • Attach two antennae made of pipe cleaners or curling ribbon
  • Butterfly Wand
    • Materials
      • Popsicle stick
      • Pipe cleaner
      • Cone shaped coffee filter
      • Colorful markers or crayons
      • Glue – since adults do all of the gluing a hot glue gun works great
    • Instructions
      • Glue the pipe cleaner to a popsicle stick. Only apply the glue to the top half or so of the popsicle stick.
      • If using hot glue allow it to cool while children are decorating the wings. If using regular glue allow to dry completely
      • Open up a cone shaped coffee filter at the seam
      • Decorate the coffee filter with markers or crayons
      • You want to focus on the outer parts of the coffee filter because the middle of it is going to be very crumpled
      • Attach the paper to the popsicle stick with the pipe cleaner
      • Bend the ends of the pipe cleaner to form antennae
  • Butterfly Window Hanging
    • Materials
      • Waxed paper
      • Crayon shavings
      • Scissors
      • An iron
      • Hole punch
      • Few inches of string
    • Instructions
      • Fold a piece of waxed paper in two
      • Draw half a butterfly with the body at the fold
      • Flip the paper over and draw the other half of the butterfly – using your original as a template
      • Open the waxed paper and put it on a flat surface
      • Place some crayon shavings on the waxed paper. Inside the butterfly that you drew on the waxed paper
      • Cover the waxed paper with another sheet of wax paper
      • Iron the two layers of waxed paper together on low heat. To protect your iron put a paper towel on top of the waxed paper while you are ironing
      • Cut out the butterfly
      • Punch a hole near the top of the butterfly and tie a string to the hole
      • Hang up the butterfly in a window
  • Butterfly Card
    • Materials
      • Construction paper
      • Pencil
      • Scissors
      • Hole punch
      • Glue stick
      • Markers or crayons
      • Glitter glue or glitter
    • Instructions
      • Fold two pieces of construction paper in half. This makes two card shapes.
      • Place the two folded cards together, one inside the other
      • Along the fold of the outside piece of paper draw half of a butterfly
      • Keeping the two cards together cut along the outline that you just drew. This will give you two butterflies
      • On one of the butterflies fold it in half again and draw a smaller butterfly within it
      • Cut along the outline you just drew
      • Use a hole punch to make a series of holes along the edges of the two pieces that you just cut
      • Glue on of the pieces onto the larger uncut butterfly
      • Turn the larger butterfly over and glue on the other cut piece
      • Cut out a black or brown body for the butterfly
      • Glue it to the inside of your butterfly
      • Write a message into your card and decorate it with crayons, markers, and glitter.
